To apply to become an ICA at Colorado State University, students need to meet the following requirements:

  • live in the residence halls (at CSU or elsewhere) for two full semesters by the time they begin working as an ICA
  • be currently enrolled at CSU and making progress towards a degree (please note: if you are an INTO CSU student, you may not qualify as an enrolled student)
  • have completed 15 credit hours at the time of hire

Inclusive Community Assistant (ICA)


The Inclusive Community Assistant (ICA) is a live-in student staff member in Residence Life. ICAs provide strategies for, and assist residents and staff with creating inclusive communities, promoting CSU’s Principles of Community, intentional conversations, peer mediation and support programming and collaborative efforts with Student Diversity Program and Services (SDPS). ICAs are knowledgeable about campus resources and their services to students. Utilizing diverse and educational programs they will challenge members within the community to grow both personally and academically. The ICAs along with other staff members and residents are responsible for helping to create an atmosphere conducive to study and enjoyment. They are there to help residents learn how to live respectfully and responsibly with other individuals and how they can contribute to a positive campus climate.



The Inclusive Community Assistant is responsible for assisting students individually and in groups. The ICA’s primary role is to facilitate the creation of a positive residence hall environment which supports students’ transition, academic, and personal success. In order for this environment to develop, ICAs must make significant connections with residents and guide them to resources on-campus. Strategies for success include maintaining individual and group contact, possessing a thorough knowledge of campus resources, planning and implementing diverse activities, leadership development, and responding to community and individual concerns.


Position Responsibilities

Inclusion and Diversity Focus

1.Utilize and promote activities and strategies that contribute to increasing students’ multicultural competence.

2.Support students to utilize multicultural resources on campus.

3.Respond to student behavior which involves incidents of bias based on race, age, creed, color, religion, national origin or ancestry, sex, gender, disability veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or pregnancy, in accordance with CSU’s Non-Discrimination Policy:

4.Assist Residence Life Staff (mainly RAs) in creating inclusive communities within the residence halls.

Community Development

1.Promote learning and engagement among all residents.

2.Maintain on-going interactions with residents individually and as a community through community walks and one-on-one conversations.

3.Work with other ICAs, hall staff, and SDPS and DSA campus partners to implement monthly programs that meet students’ needs and contribute to building an inclusive community as well as promote student involvement.

4.Establish and maintain an environment that is supportive of successful academic achievement.

5.Encourage the development of an environment that is inclusive of the diverse backgrounds of residents.

6.Confront inappropriate behavior through one-on-one conversations, programming, and bulletin boards.

7.Work consistently to create a civil and respectful atmosphere in the hall through one-on-one conversations and community walks.

Staff Functions

1.Attend training activities: Spring training, Fall training, and any required training programs throughout the year.

2.Assist in the selection and training of new staff.

3.Develop knowledge of crisis management, response, and emergency procedures.

4.Support and adhere to University and Housing & Dining Services policies, regulations, and procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  1. ICAs must be enrolled at CSU and making progress toward their degree during their period of employment.
  2. ICAs must remain in good academic standing with the University; a GPA of 2.5 is preferred.
  3. ICAs must have completed at least 15 credit hours and lived in a residence hall for one semester at the time of hire.
  4. First semester ICAs may not student teach or hold internships. After the first semester, experiences which will take the ICA away from their building for significant time blocks are discouraged, and must be approved by the Coordinator for Diversity and Inclusion, Residence Director, and Associate Director before they are accepted.
  5. It is understood that an undergraduate staff position in residence halls cannot easily be translated into hours worked per day or week because of the unique nature of the work. The ICA job requires regularly scheduled responsibilities and times at which staff is available and accessible for purposes related to the position. Standard weekly hours include assigned hours in a campus partner office, weekly staff meetings, meeting with supervisors and other duties as assigned
  6. The ICA position is intended for one academic year (fall and spring semesters). If an ICA wishes to return the following year, they must apply for the Returning ICA position.
  7. ICAs must be available for weekly evening meetings, typically held on Tuesdays from 7:30-9:30pm.
  8. Remuneration is a single room with board while school is in session, including 21 meals/week and $150 RamCash, during the employment period.
